Land of the Free, Home of the Brave

I bet it’s been awhile since you heard that phrase. It seems like all of our good ol’ Americanisms are drifting away, being overtaken by hip terms and political popularity-speak. I don’t have any big revelations to share today, just this little musing… we’ve long thought of ourselves as “Land of the Free, Home of the Brave” because those two things go together.  We can’t very well be free without a solid dose of bravery, and bravery itself strives toward justice and freedom. True courage is based in truth – not false posturing or just “kicking ass” because somebody told you to show emotion.

Bravery is making tough decisions, walking lonely roads and never, ever being too big to fail. Bravery is looking failure in the eyes and overcoming it. Freedom is only given to those brave enough to live with the consequences of their free will, for good and bad. Can we do that? Or are we more concerned with our comfort than our character? Are we willing to take the consequences for our freedoms, or would we rather give those freedoms up in order to live a blander, less-bravery-requiring existence?
